Laws passed in Britain 1799 and 1800 making
trade unionism illegal, introduced after the
French Revolution for fear that the unions
would become centres of political agitation.
The unions continued to exist, but claimed to
be friendly societies or went underground,
until the acts were repealed 1824, largely
owing to the radical Francis Place.
